Bokeh!

'Bokeh', commonly known as background blur, which is the intentional out of focus area in a picture provides great aesthetic quality to a picture. To practice, try to find a simple subject outdoors accompanied with lots of natural light, like a stem or a flower with some depth of field in order to isolate your subject from its background... set your desired exposure according to the amount of natural light present, also have a wide open aperture which will help keep the shot in soft focus, then manually focus on your subject or a small point of interest on the subject (in the foreground only) and click...

The picture below is my attempt at Bokeh during a morning walk by Thames, I took this picture of a long thorny stem while focusing on a small section of the stem in the foreground as shown below.

To Blur or To Focus?!

Look for an interesting architectural feature or a simple branch/leaf to shoot your subject from... manually focus on the feature while the main-subject blurs in the background, or simply focus on the main-subject through the feature, blurring the foreground... both can be very interesting. Check out the pictures below of a grand manor house now a Hotel/B&B in Cotswolds, captured through it's boundary fence.

Tuscany... the sun... the food... the wine... the people... the colors... everything is so breathtaking.

An interesting perspective of Florence from the top of Duomo... try something different and you'll be surprised and pleased with the outcome... every time I look at this picture, it feels like I am sliding off...

Shutter Zoom!

A very fun & easy technique I had always wondered about and luckily stumbled upon by chance just before my easter weekend trip to Belgium. I read about it on DPS  and here is the link to the technique! DSLR's work well with this technique, but the great news is even digital point-shoot users can try this technique. Follow the instructions and have some fun!

I spent some time playing around with it... and need to work on perfecting it a bit more. My best shot (below) came after many attempts. For me what worked best was to find a good location with a line of trees on both sides, I set my ISO as low as possible which worked out at 100, dialed in a small aperture f22  in order to achieve a long exposure, and then I completely zoom onto my subject, release the shutter, and to slowly zoom out half way (not all the way on my 18-55mm lens). I did not use a tripod, but kept my hands as still as possible. Low lighting situation will help as the shutter will remain open for a longer period, and you will be able to zoom in or out much easier. In my case the light was very bright, so I had a very small window of opportunity to quickly apply this technique. Looking forward to trying this with light at night!

Hope you all enjoy experimenting with shutter zoom too :)

New Beginnings...

Brugge, Belgium ~ By Mattu

I have been thinking about starting a blog to share my photography with the world... to share new skills and new knowledge as I stumble upon them by accident or with the help and guidance of others. I hope to grow this site into a discussion forum, a place to feature other talented artists to celebrate their work and to simply enjoy beautiful photographic work!
